The CGA Committee of Management is excited to inform our members as to the appointment of a new Industry Extension Agronomist who will start work with the Association next Monday, 31 May.
Val Tanguilig has 30 years industry experience in agricultural research science, horticultural agronomy, crop management, input cost efficiency programs and yield optimisation. He has provided commercial agronomic services and technical support to primary producers across an enormous array of crops including cucumber, tomato, eggplant, capsicums, zucchini, melon, grapes, banana, papaya, corn and strawberries. He will bring to our Association a wealth of knowledge developed in a career that has seen him work throughout growing regions in Queensland, Victoria, California and the Philippines.
In addition to his agronomy background Val, has significant experience in the development and maintenance of food safety/quality management standards compliant with certification systems including Freshcare, Codex HACCP and Organic classifications. It is in the certification area of horticulture that Val has provided services to growers that include training, developing procedures and providing practical application of on-farm processes. This in particular represents a huge opportunity for our Association as we look to provide better support and value to member growers in both simplifying the processes and reducing the costs associated with implementing and maintaining compliance with certification standards like Freshcare.
It is anticipated that Val’s role will provide a more holistic approach to CGA’s support of our members. This will be delivered through advice which takes into account a variety of factors including cost of inputs, production quality, crop yield, value-chain management and market price. Ultimately, Val will be working for all growers in our region to further develop a strong, sustainable and profitable horticultural industry.
We look forward to welcoming Val to the region.
